Wonderful Winter Weddings at Hylands Estate

hylands house winter image

We love a winter wedding here at Hylands Estate, Chelmsford, Essex. It’s always a thrill to watch a bride arrive in a horse-drawn carriage along our winding drive to be met by her bridesmaids at the steps to our magnificent house. Of course, we also love it when it snows here, and so do many of our photographers as they’re able to capture the most dramatic of pictures with the white façade of Hylands House framed in crisp white snow.

Guests also remark how warm and friendly Hylands feels, especially at this time of the year. Couples love our ornate Banqueting Room decorated in deep reds and golds, perfect for family Christmas weddings. Many of our couples say they choose Hylands House for their Essex wedding as it offers heaps of style, grandeur and sophistication but intimate enough to create a real family feel.

For those inviting up to 300 guests for their big day, our Grand Pavilion is ideal; it also looks extremely dramatic during the winter months when couples opt for strong and bold themes, such as stylish tartans, cool crystals and snowflakes, and burnished golds and reds. We are also loving the trend for faux fur and is ideal to keep the bride warm throughout the day. Feathers are still a strong trend too and can help to bring a colour theme together and create sculptural centrepieces.

Of course no winter wedding would be complete without a warming winter wedding menu, many of our happy couples opt for hearty dishes, such as pies, sausage and mash, or a beautifully cooked roast.

Whatever idea you have for your winter wedding our team of experienced wedding co-ordinators are on hand to help you every step of the way.

Colourful Traditions Come to Life at Hylands

Cultural WeddingsHylands House is the perfect backdrop for beautiful, colourful wedding celebrations. Throughout the year, we arrange diverse cultural ceremonies from a traditional happy British event to the brightness and gaiety of Asian, Nigerian and Turkish weddings.

Barroque Beauty Essex WeddingVenueThe house adds to the colour and grandeur, right from that very first step into the Entrance Hall, bedecked with its marble floor. The breath-taking Drawing Room with its fabulous ornate ceilings and hand-painted wall motifs is perfect for wedding ceremonies. Then the lavishly decorated red Banqueting Room, adorned in a neo-baroque style with 24 carat gold leaf swag and scroll decorations, is a delightful place to celebrate. Our large Grand Pavilion adds to the glamour too.

All weddings have the couples own personal stamp but often cultural traditions are woven in from various countries:
• The Indian bride usually wears a red and white sari, detailed heavily with gold thread and the groom dresses in a long white, gold embroidered tunic. Their guests dress in the brightest finery.
• Hylands’ sumptuous Banqueting Room is often the No. 1 choice for Turkish couples. Gold, banknotes and the colour red are the dominating elements of a Turkish wedding ceremony. Red is the colour of good luck and fortune, therefore, the gold coins, which serve as wedding gifts, come with a tiny red silk bow and a pin attached. The bride and groom sit down at a lavishly decorated table with the witnesses by their side.
• Nigerian brides usually wear traditional tribal wedding attire. The Igbo bride has a lace blouse and a brightly coloured wrapper, and is adorned with beautiful coral beads and an exquisite head-dress. As the bride dances, the guests throw banknotes at her.
• A traditional sword dance is sometimes performed at a Scottish wedding
• In Belgium as a bride walks up the aisle she will hand a flower to her Mother and embrace her and will do the same to her Mother-in-law following the ceremony
• In Chinese weddings, a nine-course meal is popular
• It has been a German tradition for the groom to kneel on the hem of the bride’s dress to symbolise his control. Still, the bride may step on the groom’s foot when she rises to show her power.
• The first of nine sips of sake drunk by the married couple at a Japanese wedding signifies the official union of marriage.
• In Mexico, red beads are sometimes tossed at the couple to bring them good luck.

Whatever the ceremony, at Hylands, we aim to make it the best day ever for all concerned.

Ria and Matt’s Wedding at Hylands Estate

Hylands House

Weddings at Hylands House are always special, there’s always a palpable buzz of anticipation for the staff on these days so it was a real pleasure to welcome Ria and Matt (and all their guests) on their big day. The weather didn’t disappoint as we all enjoyed glorious sunshine all day.

Surrounded by landscaped parkland, our spectacular Grade II listed mansion with meticulously restored period rooms complete with the timeless glamour of a Grand Pavilion make us a natural choice for weddings. The elegance of the house, combined with the beautiful garden vistas provide the perfect backdrop for wedding photographs. Talking of photographs, the couple had booked our very own Jasmine Jade photography to shoot their wedding day. Jasmine Jade Photography is a renowned creative photographer specialising in wedding photography. Whilst her clients have her working all over London and the UK this Chelmsford Wedding photographer stays closer to home when shooting weddings at Hylands. Her talent, attention to detail and infectious passion for her work results in stunningly creative yet timeless images for her clients. We are thrilled that Jasmine Jade Photography is one of our recommended wedding photographers at Hylands. Here is what she had to say about us. “I always enjoy shooting weddings at Hylands Estate. The staff are always professional, welcoming and friendly and the beautiful grounds and elegant interior give me so many opportunities to take amazing shots of my wedding parties. I am passionate about all my shoots but as a Chelmsford Wedding Photographer it is always lovely to return to a warm welcome at Hylands.

Matt and Ria’s wedding ceremony took place in our drawing room, a magnificent and stylish room with a grand piano and ornate chandelier. Then it was through to the Banqueting room which is lavishly decorated with silk lined walls and hand painted wall motifs. Its floor to ceiling windows let the light stream in on Matt and Ria and their guests, giving a stunning view of the back lawn, parkland and Serpentine lake beyond. Everybody then enjoyed a sumptuous meal and then it was on to the speeches, which I know were one of the highlights of the couple’s day. The evening reception was held in a marquee on the grounds of Hyland where there was laughter and dancing well into the evening.

A magical wedding day filled with lots of love and plenty of laughter. Congratulations to Matt and Ria for getting married and creating such a memorable day for yourselves, your family and your friends to remember.

Hylands Estate Featured on Channel 5’s ‘I Want That Wedding’

All guests outside houseThe colourful wedding of Marie Anderson and Richard Philpotts at Hylands House in June 2015 was full of happiness and had one little guest – the couple’s son William – really enjoying the celebrations. It was also caught on camera and will be featured weekly in September as part of the I Want that Wedding! series on Channel 5, with the first programme broadcast on Tuesday 1st.

Marie, a bridesmaid nine times, knew what she wanted when it came to her own wedding. “I knew it would be Hylands”, said Marie. “Tom Harper was my contact and set my mind at ease. He made the build up to my wedding a really enjoyable one”.

Marie and Richard ensured it would be a vibrant, fun wedding. Fascinated by it all was William, born prematurely and experiencing a tough time at the start of his life, he is now a healthy baby.

The bridesmaids were dressed in different bright colours, which is bang on trend. The invitations were all different hues, as was the cake and the flowers, whilst large colourful balloons flew high above the tables.

“I loved having reception drinks in the beautiful blue room. Our guests looked around the House while we were having photos taken and the weather enabled people to enjoy the terrace and take in the amazing views.

“The wedding breakfast and the disco took place in the Grand Pavilion. This meant that all my guests were in one place whether they were on the dance floor, at the bar or sitting down as opposed to a venue that has loads of different rooms where guests are scattered.

“The whole day was my favourite part! I’ll always remember walking into the Pavilion just before we did the receiving line and being blown away by how wonderful it looked”.

Hylands Estate Offers Advice to Hitched.co.uk Readers

Culinary DelightsHylands Estate, Essex, Wedding Planner, Tamsin Beeson, recently gave her advice on catering plans for a couple’s big day to Hitched.co.uk.

Tamsin says: “There are a variety of choices these days when it comes to catering for a wedding.  It’s not just the food though – it’s the way that it is served and also what time of the day you choose to eat it. You can have mini-bites, buffet bowl food, a formal sit down or a barbecue.  All are acceptable – the emphasis is on enjoyment.”

A popular trend at Hylands during the summer months has been light and refreshing afternoon teas. Here the tables have been decorated with flowers and tea lights, delicate and colourful crockery and antique style cutlery, which is a great way to get over the very popular vintage theme. Caterers can always add a gourmet twist to a traditional English tea – beautifully iced cup-cakes, finger sandwiches with exotic cheeses, mini-cakes, lovely berry meringues and savoury as well as sweet scones.

Also during the summer months a hog roast or barbeque are popular, especially if they follow a lighter afternoon tea reception, and are a great way for evening guests to also enjoy a little more too. But a definite new trend is ‘his and her’ menus with the bride and groom opting to choose their own special meals for their big day. Here grooms are happy to plump for more home comfort style food, such as pies, sausage and mash etc, whereas the girls tend to choose fish or a lighter option.
